For the nanny who thinks that earning less then $25 per hour in DC is slavery, maybe she should take a look at salaries for college educated professionals, and many others in the DC area that are well below this.
$23 per hour for 50 hours a week (which many DC nannies work) plus legally mandated overtime is $65,780. That is a solid middle class salary.
$20 per hour for 50 hours a week (which many DC nannies work) plus legally mandated overtime is $57,200 annually. That is not a lot, but it is more than a lot of people make.
Try looking at what people in the armed services, government employees, health care workers, daycare teachers, and teaching assistants make. Also look at Uber and DoorDash.
"SLAVERY" is more like being a Ukranian woman dragged from her house and raped in front of her kids, and forced to cook for the soldiers who raped her. Slavery is having no right to your own body, and having your kids sold away from you.
"Slavery" is NOT buying a new Corolla and a perfectly nice townhome in the suburbs with husband or wife (or platonic roommate for that matter).

My sister retired (early) from teaching 20 years at the start of the pandemic. She is a nanny for 2 kids for $28/hr plus benefits. Straight 40 hours; she is not interested in working more.

PP was most likely typing on an iPhone. In the past few weeks, autocorrect has started to switch nannies to Nannie's for some reason. People have tried to change it in the settings/unlearn that mistake but it keeps correcting to the above error.
Totally fair. I felt bad as soon as I wrote that; pretty harsh and unfair of me.

I'm in Fairfax and pay my nanny $22 an hour for one child. My friend, also in Fairfax, pays $21 an hour, despite initially wanting to find someone for under $20. I believe our nannies don't have college degrees, but that doesn't matter to us.
A relative of mine said her coworker's daughter just got hired in Arlington as a nanny for $30 for one child. She's in her early 20s, college-educated, and has experience and/or
a license as an EMT.

Yes! To above post. This is ridiculous and I wish parents would really think about why they want a nanny before hiring. Especially, those of you that want to offer $16 an hr (in this area at that!) and believe $25-$30 an hr is outrageous. We care for your child/children, drive to school/activities, teach, care for them when sick, meal prep/cook, laundry, keep house tidy and try to make your lives a little easier when you come home. It’s a tough career but there are those of us that take it seriously and have a passion for it. So, please, make me understand!!!!!!
Oh, and FYI, the going rate is $25-$30 for the DMV area! And honestly, still isn’t enough for those of you selfish parents that hire us nannies for the wrong reason (SLAVERY)!!!

Couldn't agree more. Most we've come across aren't special or talented or professional in a way to warrant than a basic salary.

This doesn't have anything to do if nanny is working legal or not. Even a nanny who is not legal is getting at least 21 and up for 1 child in cash.

It is evident that there are nannies on here trolling and passing judgments on families for the rates they pay, calling them cheap and "exploitative". If you do not like a rate, don't take the job. It is as simple as that. Go find a family willing to pay your demanded rate. Many nannies try to take advantage of families with their outrageous rates. Yet let's see them go and look for a job in any other field and see if they receive remotely the same rates they get as nannies.
