So simple. Why not do it?

MB here. We've always done this. It works fine. But we also don't ask our nanny to go to the grocery store either. That $ is for activities, lunch out, etc. And haircuts. Thank you, nanny for taking care of this! Our first nanny would even buy the kids toys. It's always worked out. Honestly, if I worried a nanny would steal <$100 from me, I would never have this person alone with my kids.

I agree with a PP above that this board either has terrible nannies and a few not so great MBs, or we are just really lucky. But I am thinking the former. Where can I find sane discussion about nanny/family issues?

I'm not sure, but I would love to join the conversation!

My nanny will pick up a gallon of milk on the way into work-- it is 4 bucks-- I give her 5 back the next morning-- are things so TIGHT that you can't be without your 4 dollars for a day? Do you want interest of 3 pennies to be paid back to you the next day? AND-- I always round up-- so if something costs 9, she gets $10. That is a really stupid thing to get upset about.

You are an ass. Employees should NEVER be expected to put out any amount of money for employer, especially in a nanny situation.

Soooo many employers do it this way. DH's job expects him to front all travel costs. It can run over a grand. It's not an unusual thing at all.

Do they pay him $17/hr? I doubt it.

Why your nannies should be ok with paying for their employers. This is simply Ridiculous. I am glad I am not with these kind of Mbs. There should be a limitations of being cheap.

Give your nannies credit card or cash like most good employer do.

Yes, sometimes things are that tight. I'm in an expensive full time school program and live paycheck to paycheck and depending on my bills, my paycheck is mostly gone by Monday or Tuesday. So if I have to buy a lot of stuff (or even just a half gallon of organic milk) and have to use my own money those weeks, I have no money left over until I'm paid again.
My paycheck is a fraction of what nanny employers make and I can't always afford to use my money on them or their kids. I usually still do it but then might not have money for the bus or metro.

Wow you know what? A couple of times $4 was a lot to me. I had just moved and had an unexpected medical bill....on top of all my other bills. It was tight. Some people have tighter budgets. You don't know what is going on in their life. I hate hate being asked to pick stuff up without getting money. My other pet peeve is every F'ing wed we go somewhere with $2 parking. Every wed MB forgets and doesn't put it in the bag. I have to ask every single time. Yep $4 doesn't seem like a lot to YOU but to the person that doesn't haven't it is.

Apparently, parents assuming a nanny should front her own money for requested NF necessities, is a MAJOR problem UNLESS there's been prior agreement to do so.
