What did you do, OP?

I don't blame you one bit, OP. You did your MB a huge favor coming in at 4am and I feel like she should have paid you at the time you worked or the following day; on call work, especially off-hours, isn't the same as your regular hours and regular paycheck.

Were you paid on the books? There is more to it than just writing a check.

I am paid on the books, yes, and there isn't THAT much more to it? It's a small amount of math to deduct the applicable taxes (my MB used to use a payroll service although now they pay me through their accountant) although, to be fair, in that situation she asked if she could pay me my gross rate and withhold the taxes from my next check. Of course I agreed that was fine.

Everyone handles grief differently, yes. However.. as an employee I think the nanny had every right to question the OT.

Maybe this has been asked.. but did MB not make previous arrangement with you to cover the time? If she had, then I would expect payment to already be figured out.

You don't sound like someone I would hire or retain.

I am not a nanny. I do, however, pay, on time, anyone who performs work for me wjen payment is due. Furthermore, I would have told OP wjen I asked this HUGE favor that ALL of these hours would be OT.

Yes, that would be the best way to handle the situation and that's what I would have done if I was the MB in this situation, however, everyone handles stress and grief differently and I think it's showing some compassion to give her a few days to grieve before discussing money. Sometimes in extenuating circumstances it's nice to show a little sensitivity.

If my nanny works on a weekend, it gets paid the following payday (Friday) not on Monday. Our week starts sat and ends in Friday. So if your arrangement is similar that could be why.

Right, and I understand that. I was just asking MB to see if I would be payed for the hours, and she didn't say, "Next paycheck". She just seemed upset by the question in general.

It's totally understandable that you would want to know but I think it was just bad timing. I don't think your MB handled it the best way possible. As an MB I wouldn't have been upset by the question but then again not everyone handles stress well and she has some major stress going on. I would definitely not take her reaction to me she isn't going to pay you and I don't think I'd bring it up again immediately given her reaction the first time but maybe mention it to DB or wait until it is closer to your next paycheck.

You obviously deserve to be paid for that time you worked sooner rather than later and I can understand why you'd be curious about it but it was a little insensitive to ask her when you did.

Today is Tuesday and you are wondering where the money is? Or was it a full week ago that you worked the overtime? Do you get direct deposit or a check?

Let me tell you what likely happened from the perspective of someone who recently lost someone. The entire week my family member died, I was in a fog. Entire week. Our nanny worked a ton of overtime, and was amazing, but did the thought cross my mind to give her a check at that time? No. Would I have been annoyed if she had asked me then. You bet. Then again, I guess it depends on your relationship with your nanny. Our nanny knew I was good for it, and when I came back to the realm of dealing, I paid her the overtime. I also forgot to pay our mortgage, car payment, water bill, etc. When you lose someone you care about, bills are the last thing on your mind. In your case, it has beeen TWO DAYS. Give the woman a break. If she hadn't given you your regular paycheck, that's one thing, but give her a couple of days to get herself together and then if she hasn't given you the overtime, you can ask for it.

As a practical matter, if you get paid by a direct deposit check or a payroll service, then your MB would not have had time to make a change as those need to be made a week in advance. It sounds like you are paid a paper check, so perhaps that isn't applicable, but just a thought.

Look, I agree that you should be paid, but I guarantee you, your MB has 1001 other things she is dealing with. Please let her grieve for two days.

Agree with this 100%

You have obviously never been in a situation where it needs to be asked. It's not stupid, it's incredibly frustrating and embarrassing. Consider yourself fortunate and try to dial down the smugness.
