I didn't know the length of swim when taking the job. Just that they would have swim lessons. Also the second swim practices were bought up about 2-3 weeks before summer started so I wasn't aware at all I'd be at two swim practices during the summer.

And to the person who thinks I'm lying about the hours of swim practice your a moron with apparently nothing better to do.

I'd take this job in a heartbeat. I spent a summer with a wild bunch of inner-city kids with almost no budget for activities and took the city bus for field trips. This sounds like a paid vacation in comparison.

OP has an awesome job. Hang out at the pool all day. Keep sunscreen and a hat on. Get off off your butt to cool off in the water. Go back to sitting. Nap on your lounge chair while the kids are in the lessons. Get paid for it!

Long napping toddlers and preschoolers are the best for nannies who want a say! OP you made the mistake of taking a job with older kids so sadly its not your time anymore. You'll have to do what the parents want. Since the kids are older you can't just lie to the parents and do something else you want anyway.

It is so easy to get spoiled watching little kids where you get do to what ever you want. Older elementary school kids will not put up with being pushed around a mall in stroller LOL! Try getting a 6 year old boy to do a play date with a 2 yr old girl so you can talk with a nanny that doesn't drive you crazy! Older kids will also tell on you if you break the rules which sucks.

But your getting paid between 8 and 11 and 4 and 6pm so like 5 hours in a day where you could lie under an umbrella and read, or paint your toenails or work on your tan ect. You are being paid for 5 hours a day when a swim instructor is in charge of them...... what a great summer job!

OP - how old are the kids? I am guessing school age from your post but I do think actual age makes a difference here. Also are you their full time nanny or are you just there for the summer? If you are their full time nanny, what are afternoons during school like? Do you take the kids to lots of other activities and spend lots of time outdoors with them?

At the end of the day, your comments about your MB suggest this job is not the right fit for you. If you just took this job for the summer, I think you're stuck unless you quit (and honestly, how did you not see this coming?). If this is a family you've been with for a while and want to continue to be with after the summer, I think your likelihood of success in addressing this situation with your MB will depend a lot on how old the kids are, how long you've been with the family (and how badly they want to keep you), and how willing you are to engage in their other activities (ie: standing outside in the cold in the winter to take them to soccer and baseball, and whatever else boys their age do these days). In all cases, I think it's on you to come up with alternative fun, engaging, indoor/cooler activities for the summer to present during that conversation.

Who in the hell lets the kids do what they want? Parents who are feeling the guilt of not doing the parenting.

Do these pool loving kids have any daily chores when they get home? Or are they too tired?

These parents are going down the wrong road here.

A job not suiting someone is not a fault. What would be a fault is if OP continues with this job and develops a bad attitude, starts half-assing her job, or tries to force the kids to fit a schedule she prefers. I don't think there's anything wrong with kids spending their days outside in the pool so long as precautions are taken, they stay hydrated, and have a shady place to rest if needed. I can also understand why OP wouldn't enjoy the prospect of doing this all day every day for an entire summer. You need to find a better fit OP, and this time ask how the kids like to spend their days up front.

You're not replying to something the OP wrote. That isn't her fault. It's yours.

I agree with you, OP. It's fine for kids to have preferences and to be allowed to choose activities some of the time, but they should not be the rulers of their little kingdom all day, every day. It's not good for them to have that much control. The parents also need to trust the judgment of the person they have hired to care for their children, so if you see an issue such as this, you should be able to address it.

However, from what you have said, you're never going to have this kind of relationship with these particular employers, and they are never going to set these boundaries for their children. So, I would advise that you start looking for a new position, and once you have secured it, give your notice.

The family should have gotten themselves a 13 year old sitter in a bikini who would be most pleased to hang at the pool all summer long with the boys.
