I've experienced families that have told me to rest up. When my current family showed me around the house on my interview, she said "here's the guest room if you'd ever want to nap. " Sleeping while the kids are awake, however, is dangerous and irresponsible.

When I was hired I agreed to start at 7...my family asks me to come in at 515 am at least half the days I work...so they can go work out and I still work to at least 530 pm...sometimes later. Gosh I wish I could nap! I know it wouldn't fly but it is a long day and I am so tired...very soon we are having a conversation that I want to stop the early early hours and if they any accommodate that I need more compensation than my regular hourly rate....
No I don't think nannies nap? No one that I know does.

Go on "Be The Best Nanny Newsletter" on Facebook . There is a discussion on it right now and there are quite a few interesting responses and viewpoints.

If a nanny is tired during nap time, I'd rather she rest and wake refreshed and alert than try to slog through the day making the kind of stupid mistakes we all do when we're groggy.

What sense would it make for me to just sit there listening for any little sound for the next three hours?
Plus, I would be wiped out the rest of the work day.

I have a job where I arrive early as well.

The parents just tell me to grab a blanket and pillow and go back to sleep on the sofa because the kid won't be awake for another couple hours anyway.

Most families let their nannies do this.

What's the big deal??

These are vastly different situations from what most posters are talking about. Of course, when you arrive hours early and at 5am it makes perfect sense to rest until you are needed. Nannies, or any other employees really, who arrive at a sensible hour (7:30/8 am) and leave at a sensible hour (6/7 pm) should be able to get plenty of rest in the evening and at night to make it through their day without needing a nap. I've been a nanny for over 10 years and can't imagine even being ABLE to fall asleep on the job, let alone being asked or allowed to do so.

It isn't a big thing. A couple of people here just need to bitch about everything.
