After someone has worked for you for two years (i.e. Ortega) they are no longer "a complete stranger off the street." The Krims met her family, traveled with her, and saw her provide quality care for their children for TWO YEARS. Your suggestion that temporary financial troubles on her side should have been cause for immediate alarm and that they failed to take proper care of their kids by not (over)reacting is what's offensive here, not me.

Parents don't "bare" any responsibility for anything, PP.

Anyway, this notion that small children are so vulnerable and parents should be on their guard always, with everyone, assumes the worst of human nature when in fact, 99% of the time, nannies - even if they aren't otherwise great at their job - treat the children well and protect them from harm. To suggest that parents should be suspicious of their nanny every time they have an odd interaction or she asks for a raise creates an atmosphere of distrust and anxiety that isn't productive or necessary.

I guess all those people who died on 9/11 should have planned accordingly. Didn't they know that Middle Easterners could be terrorists? I sure did. So, since I am responsible for my own basic safety, I should have known to get off those planes immediately.
