In the process of interviewing - so fresh off the press: 22$ for 1 child seems to be a sweet spot. In general it's all over the place, kinda like shopping for rugs in Istanbul, people claim outrageous things, but then agree to "drop" to 22$ and I suspect might be amenable even to 20$ if there are enough hours. I had a people with very little English claim to make $26 (one child) or $30 (2 kids) in English speaking families. I don't know how that works, either parents are super rich and don't care to communicate with the nanny at all or the nanny is embellishing (lying).

But it's not like nannies are dropped on this planet with twenty years of experience is it? Everyone has to start at some point. They do too. "Inexperienced" is not a judgment, it's simply a description of where one is in their professional path.

Thats' why the person in Bethesda had "nannies', not "nanny". Will lower rate, the nanny will gain experience and move on to higher pay, and then the whole point of having consistency/secure attachment is missed since you would have to find new nanny, over and over.

To this poster that put this nonsense. The going rate for experienced professional nannies IS $25-30!! Especially, due to the pandemic with positions being more challenging with WFH parents and in my experience MORE WORK!! You can even find this info on White House Nannies Agency website. Also, need to offer better better as well! Parents talk to other families in your neighborhood but also, talk to nannies as well, if possible! I say this because your going to hear about a lot of different duties that are performed but that doesn’t mean that specific nanny performs them. If they do, it may not be for the same rate as shared. All nannies perform different duties and have their specific rate according to those duties.


MoCo families are cheap and have always been cheap when it come to childcare. This isn’t a secret.

You’re absolutely right. Kids are expensive and not everyone should have kids if they cannot afford them. Also, a nanny is a luxury most cannot afford but think they deserve. Put your child in a cheap daycare or in home daycare.


There is no such thing as cheap childcare. Even a “cheap” daycare center in DC runs over 2,200 per month and sometimes north of 2,800. I’m all about families paying nannies well, but offering 18/hr plus benefits for a nanny isn’t exploitive. Don’t take the job if you don’t want it. Not all families can can afford 30/he and it doesn’t make it exploitive and it doesn’t make it a luxury. Safe child care is a necessity, not a luxury. And during a pandemic a nanny position also offers both parties a far larger degree of protection from exposure than child care centers do. Also, most child care centers pay minimum wage, and expect their employees to be fluent in English and to have a CDA, at minimum. While some professional nannies have advanced degrees and are educated, many are not. There’s a range of experience levels, education, literacy, and English fluency, as well as tasks that folks are willing to do as a nanny, and that range is why the salary range is what it is. You can’t elevate a profession or demand high salaries commensurate with qualifications and experience across the board for everyone if your professional colleagues don’t have the same experience and qualifications and there are no basic standards, credentials, or qualifications to get into the profession.


There are plenty of cheaper childcare options other than a nanny. You are delusional and living in a bubble if you think there is no cheap childcare out there. Safe childcare can simply be someone putting your child in a crib all day and making sure they don’t die. So listen carefully, no one is entitled to a nanny. If you cannot afford a nanny too bad. Nanny is a luxury service that not everyone can afford. Would you go to Ruth Chris and say, hey my child deserves to eat the best Bc they are growing and it’s a necessity so I want to pay $10? Would you go to Mercedes and say, I want your SUV Bc it’s the best and since reliable transportation is a necessity Bc I have a child, I only want to pay $5k? No you wouldn’t Bc you get those are luxury items. No one has to explain to you what exploiting a nanny is Bc you are well aware it happens. I never said $18/hr plus benefits is exploitive. Would I take the position? Absolutely not but that’s Bc I know I can demand more. You’re right that another nanny will take the position and it’s usually Bc they don’t know any better. You don’t want to call it exploiting so find another word that helps you feel better.
