We asked our AP (joined us for her second year) if she just wanted to go home because it wasn’t going to be the same experience. She thought about it for a week and then came back to us saying exactly that. She wasn’t going home to anything better - she’d work at a daycare, have to wear masks, and wouldn’t be able to go out. Might as well live somewhere new, save some money, and travel via car a bit while you can. We are overly accommodating about her schedule though since we know she has options that we don’t have.

There are crazies on both sides right now... ones who said they'd extend months ago have suddenly changed their minds.

That was us! Once our AP renegged and made her intentions clear, she was persona non-grata. Our kids say that they miss her, but DH and I are so bitter and betrayed. We don't keep in touch with her anymore, as we do with our previous APs. Our kids don't understand, but I. Just. Can't.

I can only hope that karma catches up with her.

This is us, too. We still have our AP, who was with us pre-Covid. She will go home soon, and we are not planning to get another one for now. It just doesn't seem fair, and I don't think the au pair would be happy. While we could really use the help with our kids, I don't want to do so at the expense of our au pair's misery...
