Since OP hasn’t been back, I am guessing the nanny took the news in stride and all this hand-wringing was for nothing.

All nannies know their current nanny job will end. That has never been an issue.

Its not at the hands of the 8 year old. Its at the hands of the parents who pay the nanny. At 8, for one child, its a bit absurd to have a full time nanny in less family is very wealthy. Kid expressed an opinion that he prefers the after school program to a nanny to be with his friends. Its a reasonable comment. After school care is much cheaper and parents can make the hours work. Most jobs are at the choice of the employer, not nanny and you can get fired for any reason at any time. A nanny job, for the most part is time limited till the kids go to school.
