This. People have to stop with the "going rate" crap. You pay what it takes to keep a valuable employee.
I agree - these "going rate" questions are insane. Even for a first time hire, it all depends on what you want and where you live - and even then a desirable potential employee can be fielding other offers and you lose her to a higher offer.
