I worked for the same family for 5 years and I very much felt like a member of the family. My boss worked from home so we had a closer relationship than I think nannies have with their employer when the employer works out of the home. We had some hiccups through the years but always worked things out in a fair, respectful manner. I think another reason why we became so bonded was that one of the kids was diagnosed with a serious illness and the mom and I were the ones who were in the thick of it getting through it together. We had a good relationship prior to that, but the experience of caring for a sick child bonded us in a way that isn't typical for most nannies/employers.

I remain close with them but have not been their nanny for about 3 years now. We see each other regularly both with and without the kids. They recently asked if they could name me as legal guardian in the event that something should happen to both of them. So while I don't necessarily think it's the typical experience, it's also not unheard of to become family to one another.

An employee is an employee, not part of any employer's family.

Another one whose NF say it to me a lot but it is all lies. They think I do my job great, sure, but they wouldn't as OP said, care if I was having surgery. I kind of resent them saying it as it is such a strong sentiment. I would go as far as to say it is the equivalent of telling someone you love them and I know they certainly don't feel that deeply which is why them saying it annoys me.

I see my nanny as family, we aren't close in that we sit and chat for ages or anything like that but it's like this unspoken bond and I trust her implicitly knowing she cares for my DD incredibly well. When you are able to leave someone in your home where your dirty laundry, unpaid bills and general life is you can't help but attach yourself to that person and really feel they are a part of your family.

I'm fine with it as long as they mean it.

Not if it's just something they say to manipulate me to do as they please.

I do feel like I am a member of the family and one of MB's best friends. It can happen.
