I'd happily pay $25/hr for this but not sure we'll be able to find someone reliable. It does seem like the proverbial unicorn.

At $25, I bet you will. I would advertise and see.

I agree if you advertise your $25/hr and say that absolute reliability is a must. For the right price you can find almost anything.

Sure, but again, I'm looking for actual experiences of parents having done this and whether or not they were actually able to find someone reliable.

Yes, I've done this for families before and enjoyed it. I was reliable every day and all year long. You just need to get the persons story and have them explain why they think it will work. Is it on their way to another job, are they a student, etc. If they tell you they have nothing until 10am and you only need them from 6-8am they will probably flake because that kinda sucks to get up 4 hours early and then have a 2 hour gap between jobs, especially if they drive 20-25 minutes to your house.

I think some personal assistants can earn $40/hr.

OP here. Just to be clear. I am not the poster wth an HHI of $450k and we cannot afford to have a full-time housekeeper (nor do we need one). But if I did, I can definitely see how paying someone full time and using them when j need them would be great.

I agree. With an HHI of $450K, a full-time employee who can take pretty much everything domestic off your plate is the way I'd go, too. Then you have coverage for all the holidays and such, too.

I don't know, I don't think this really solves it. Money-wise, before-care only is almost as expensive as just doing both before/after-care. And I'd still have to get the kids up and out in the morning, which is honestly the biggest issue without in-home care. And then I'd have to manage both the before/after-care program AND a nanny. Sorry for not clarifying - I'm looking for a 100% perfect solution

Everyone wants 100% perfect solution. You CAN have it, but everything comes with a price.

Not OP but if I can't afford it, not perfect

And MBs complain of nannies' entitlement...

Uh, nannies complain about how we can't pay them what they think they should get paid on this board all the time. I'm not going to pay my nanny more than I get paid per hour. So I will get an au pair or use before/after care if the only acceptable wage to work my gig "comes with a price" I can't afford.

More parents should be as wise as you and OP.

Good nannies are for the rich. It's not really a middle class thing.

In all fairness I have a HHI of $450k. I'd argue au pairs are also for the rich. It's just not a great schedule and hard to get good coverage for because there aren't many nannies, babysitters, college students, SAHMs, etc looking to add a massive hassle to their morning then have their afternoons and evenings shot 7 hours later.

OP here. No one is claiming they're entitled to perfect care for dirt cheap. Did you see my little winking face after my "I want something perfect" quote? Obviously, if I paid someone $50/hour, I could probably get them to work whenever I wanted. But surely you can see how that would make the situation not "perfect." I'm not whining about it or acting like anyone owes it to me - I am plain and simple asking if anyone has found what I'm looking for. If not (and it sounds like not), we'll stick with before/after care. No big deal.

It would take longer to find, but there must be someone out there who would be willing to take this type of duty on.

The person would ideally live very close by. Perhaps another parent whose child attends the same school or a retired person.

It's usually earlier to find someone for just the morning slot, so could you swing a morning-only nanny/sitter and after care?

Anonymous wrote:OP, I haven't heard you mention finding a different person for the morning and afternoon shifts, but this seems like the obvious solution to me. There are some FT nannies out there whose workday starts late enough that they'd have the time for a morning school drop-off. And plenty of other people who are not FT nannies as well. If it is only one hour of work, I think you might have to pay more than just $25 for the one hour of work. Maybe $15 x (hours worked + commute time). I actually think the afternoon shift is harder to fill. I know there are a lot of PT nannies out there who work afternoons only, but they tend to be nannies who used to be FT for the same family and agreed to downsize their hours. I was looking for afternoon care and could not find anyone willing to work all 5 days so I had to split the days between two sitters. It was not workable (maybe for you, it will, though) and I ended up hiring someone for almost FT hours.

I'm not OP but I did post previously about being in the same position, and I tried that too, but at the same $25/hr. In all fairness I wouldn't take my 5/hr a week job either...
