I am a nanny and this is not at all hypocritical. An employer can demand you do any number of things that he/she doesn't do. I think nannies would do themselves a huge service if they would understand that simple point as it is applicable in ALL fields.

A nanny and a grown-up. This is simply life in the working world. Your boss/owner of the company gets to do lots of things the employee doesn't get to do. Not the least bit hypocritical - simply the way of the world.

While I agree, I am thankful I can up and quit any job I am unhappy at. I work with newborns and infants but I will not work with a family that won’t let me leave the house. Babies need interaction and so do adults. Hence baby lap time is filled with nannies and mothers of newborns and infants.

I worked with a family who had an 18 month old. Just 4 hour shifts each time but it was incredibly boring. They lived in a tiny apartment, didn't want the TV on and had no music to play. It felt like a prison and I was glad to leave.

I always feel very lonely and isolated when my charge is a newborn and first born. In both of my positions, I have started with new families with just the newborn and in neighborhoods I didn't know. Walks were my only outing. But it is just for six months and then I was able to take the baby to classes and the library.

It is the nature of the work, I think. Both of my charges were born in the middle of flu season, too.

I'm willing to take a position in which MB is not comfortable with a new nanny driving charges until she knows her (she said ~2-3 months), but only if there's some other way to have some kind of adult interaction. If we can walk to activities or the park, great! If we can host all the playdates (and since I'm going to have to use my contacts, the kids might not always be within 2-3 months), that works too. But I've interviewed for positions in which the mom said the nanny would spend the whole shift in the house and yard, three children under 4, because she didn't want the infant going out to be exposed to germs until a year old.
