We got our exceptional nanny on care.com. She is amazing. And yes, she is older and I wanted an older nanny to take care of my baby. What I actually wanted was a mom. A mom that had experience with babies and had patience and understanding of dealing with a newborn. She also has values and priorities that match mine - most likely because she is older and grew up in a different country. She is so good with the baby and just a really nice person. We never want her to leave!

Not this time. OP is asking where other MBs found their exceptional nannies. I would never trust a nanny (or any employee in any field) to judge whether he/she was "exceptional".

I have never found an exceptional nanny either. It is very discouraging.

When we hired our nanny, she was a 28 year old immigrant with a HS education and not a lot of experience. We found her by advertising on DCUM. She absolutely wowed us at her interview and she's a natural with young children (and while she didn't have a lot of experience with paid nannying, she'd raised younger cousins when she was a teen).

She's been truly truly amazing. She is energetic, kind but firm, punctual, an excellent communicator, and she's taught my son a second language. But I think we just lucked out.

I never have found an exceptional nanny. We tried agencies, online postings and postings on college education-majors message boards.

It has to be the luck of the draw. Our nanny is fine but by no means exceptional.

We have two great nannies We found them on care.com. Neither of them had been rated.

It took going through several nannies before we found them. We found several bad nannies too...some of which somehow had 5 star ratings on Care....and I'd rate them only 2 stars.

I am fairly certain that we have the world's greatest nanny. She is older (which does seem to be a trend on this thread worth noting) and well-educated. She has an amazing work ethic and has never been late or called in sick in 20 months of being with DS. She does not text at all and has a cell phone ONLY so that DH and I can reach her or she needs it in an emergency (we don't have a landline).

How we found her is a fluke! It was on care.com and she accepted our invitation for an interview just because we lived within walking distance of her home and she was tired of commuting! (Care.com has a gauge to select only those families within a mile of the nanny's home.)

Sometimes, as PP said, it is just blind, dumb luck. She wanted to work close to her home and we loved her on sight! She came into our house and asked where she could wash her hands. After she washed them, she took my newborn baby from my mother and held him for the entire interview - and he was 100% calm and peaceful in her arms. She was articulate, interested, very pleasant and easy to talk to. All of her references said that she was a Pied Piper and all the kids loved her -- this was completely accurate. She is a natural.
