DH and I were off work Friday and our nanny worked. I don't feel the slightest bit guilty - she has guaranteed paid hours even if she doesn't work them, she got a bunch of bonus paid time off around the holidays, and we needed time for us and to run errands.

Why are you a nanny? Your job wouldn't exist if parents didn't need caregivers.

All the worst nannies are showing their worst side on this thread. It's sickening.

On the contrary, you're the sickening one here.
I should mention, one of my favorite former employers always told me:
"The main reason I can be successful at my job, is because you do an outstanding job with my child."
Think about it.

I have no idea what you think your point is.

Seriously.

Most nannies know which parents would like to give her a surprise day off, in order to spend some extra parenting time with their child. That kind of thing is hard to hide from the nanny.

Oh, but it IS necessary to defend yourself if whatever you intend to do today doesn't sufficiently meet your standard of "worthy of requiring me to work"?

No one said you had to defend yourself. That has nothing to do with my right to be annoyed about it. I'm sure your boss occasionally does selfish things, perhaps at your expense, but such that you can't complain to their face about it? That is all this is. Employees bitching about their bosses, who sometimes do annoying or selfish things.

I receive and take very little time off each year in comparison to my boss. I get 5 days at my choosing, 5 at their choosing, while they get a few weeks off beyond that (and because I work in a share, that time does not trickle down). 5 days is not much to work with throughout the entire year, so yes it annoys me to see all of my employers choose to laze about while I care for their kids and clean up after them. My MBs went fucking shopping today and got manicures. My husband is home sick (and I am sick myself) with a cold the kids passed on to me, and I'm pissed off that I'm here instead of with him.

You have every right to be upset, considering your circumstances.

Because of what you described, my next contract gets something like this:

CHILD ILLNESS
Parents will alert nanny in advance of child's illness, so that nanny may plan accordingly.
If nanny agrees to work with a sick child, and she contracts the illness (in spite of her best efforts to protect herself), reasonable accommodations will be made available for her to recuperate. She will not be forced to use her limited PTO or sick leave under these circumstances. Nor will she be penalized in any way.

OP here....I am also a mom, so no, I don't get to do whatever I want. That said, I should've asked off so I could have the day with my daughter. I kinda figured MB would tell me to take off since she was off cause I assumed she would want time with her child.

Also, most people have to work today. I work for the Government, which is generally very liberal with closures, and I am at work.

If you want the day off take a vacation day, like everyone else. You just sound entitled, judgmental and obnoxious.

Heads up. Each poster here speaks only for herself.

Wow. I cannot believe she is making you come in when she is going to be there.

It would have been a great opportunity for her to be a parent...err...spend some quality time with her child.

MB here - our nanny has off because she requested it. However, if she had been working, I could have asked her to work 10-2 so I could go do errands and (GASP) spend time alone, maybe go to the gym. That way I actually would have all weekend to RELAX and parent my child vs. drag him around with me on said errands.

Don't assume you know why a person with the day off wants you to come in. This is exactly why I'd want my nanny to come in for part of the day. If I could do all my errands in one day, my weekend would be SO nice and I could spend time with my son. End of story.

Why shoukd you be off bc the parent is off?

Just don't pretend to miss your child so much.

This. You already see her for 30 minutes in the morning, and an hour at night. You've been out at Christmas parties and work events all month, and I've been with her even more. You act like it kills you to be away, and expect me to sympathize, then today, you have an extra day off and you decide to do what? Sleep in, get a pedicure, and hang out with your friends. Yes of course it's your right, but it is also my right to judge you, and I see right through the BS. You don't miss your kid. You want me to think you do. She's just an accessory. A box you checked off on your type A list of "accomplishments" and bragging rights.
