Of course she didn't. She's not a child and won't throw a tantrum. She certainly disappointed right now. Your end of the year bonus really should come at the holidays. But you can just let her know that you have always done bonuses at the end of the year vs at the holidays. Your last nanny didn't buy your children holiday presents? It is pretty typical for nannies to buy gifts for their charges. Maybe next year you can do a nice card and a small gift. Let your children take part in it. I'd say you messed up pretty big.

I would send flowers (Order online?-although not sure if too late) with a nice note or a bonus as others have said.
It would have been thoughtful of you to have thought about your nanny and gave them something but if you say, you didn't exchange gifts with previous nanny then I guess it is to be expected for it not to be in your mind.
I bought gifts for my charge and wrote a lovely card. I got a gift back too and a small bonus.

While my Nanny Family typically gives me a gift for both Christmas & my birthday, I never give a gift to them.

Honestly I feel the majority of families do not mind this
since many are under the impression that their Nannies are making less of a living than they are.

OP, I think you should have given your Nanny her bonus prior to the actual day OF Christmas so she could use some of it to do some of her own Christmas shopping.
Or do something fun + special for her time off.

While it is too late this year, you should plan on doing this for next year.

I don't find it weird at all. I gave my boss a nice frame with a very nice pic of the kids that I had taken recently. It's just a token of appreciation, the same way I want them to appreciate me, I want them to know I appreciate them.

Nanny here. I give little gifts to the kids only. A couple times I have had the kids write mushy notes for their parents listing five reasons why they think mommy and daddy are wonderful. Sometimes I write one too.

As for my own home, I have learned over the years to buy and wrap a couple of spare gifts for "emergencies". Usually it is one of those tins of cookies. And I keep some cash around so I can sneak off to the bedroom to put some cash in a card if needed.

Oh, just stop with this nonsense. Bonuses are earned for a job well done if and whenever an employer feels like giving it. This employer is giving her nanny an end of the year bonus, because obviously, she believes her nanny has earned it. That is fine. It is also fine if she didn't give a bonus at all. Any nanny who feels entitled enough to a bonus and change their job attitude or leave their job because of it....should. It is a petty and stupid thing to judge a job on. It's also especially galling since so many DC workers have not seen raises or bonuses in years, if ever, and nannies think they are somehow more valuable than other workers and that their bonuses and raises are standard. Newsflash, they aren't. Eventually, families will trade you in because the percentage of their income for you keeps going up while their income stays the same.

So, it's probably a good idea if you greedy nannies remember that you are lucky to have jobs. We all are.
