I'm from a generation where the only people who got tattoos were military or motorcycle gang types. Piercings were for Tower Record employees or those into punk rock and then the Goths started doing it.
To me, I still don't understand why anyone would want to do that to themselves. I have heard all the things from it is a way of expressing yourself to being an individual. But I also see too many people who don't really think about what they are doing and have regretted the piercings or tattoos. And now all the bad tattoo shows and websites have popped up. And more than one person has expressed that they wish they hadn't done it, especially the guy I know with a tattoo of Mickey Mouse giving someone the finger.
So, instead of bashing someone like me, educate me on why doing this to yourself is such a great idea.
Even if someone made a poor decision about a tattoo the logic just does not add up. Are you suggesting a parent with a tattoo should have their kids put into the foster-care system because they must also be bad parents? Your idea that decisions about adorning your body are somehow correlated to your childcare ability would lead to thousands of people being unfit parents, grandparents, and care providers.

Multiple posts on this thread have attempted to do just that, and they have been completely ignored because a lot of people with your opinion are not interested in facts or education, they are too married to their opinion. I have already stated that it'd be near impossible for a baby to grab my piercing, and that I wear one during the week that is so small that most don't even notice it. I have it because I think it's pretty, its pretty unobtrusive, and I know it will close if I decide I no longer want it. I have a relatively visible tattoo on my upper back and neck that I designed myself (I am also an artist) and it was inspired by the abuse that I endured as a child. I was emancipated at 16, and decided I wanted the tattoo around then. I made the design and mulled it over for 2 years. Once I reached a point of stability, and could afford it, I had the tattoo done. Yes there are people who make thoughtless decisions about piercings and tattoos, but the same could be said about all aspects of life couldn't it? It seems like a silly reason to judge the entire population. My tattoo means a great deal to me and it always will. It's also much prettier than the emotional scars, which will also always be with me unfortunately.

I just don't understand why anyone would want to do that. Also, the majority of the people that I see with these piercings are very "trashy" looking in general. Even if they aren't, I still assume that they don't come from a very nice area or have a nice job, etc. I just don't get it. When you are 50+ years old, why are you going to want all of these holes in your face? Same with tattoos. Just don't.

Here's why. Sometimes people are low income because of a slew of bad luck all at once: car wreck, job loss, health issues all at the same time. But sometimes people are low income because the only job they can get with their neck tattooed is working as a cashier at McDonalds. The reality is nobody will hire you as a lawyer at a law firm if your face is tattooed because their clients won't want to work with you. Sometimes you're low income because of bad decisions. Yes, my elementary school aged DD's Indian friend has her nose pierced. But everyone can look at that and think "Oh, she's Indian, so of course." But if someone shows up for an interview with an eyebrow and labret piercing, there's no good reason for putting holes in your face like that. Except that you're ... somebody who would make decisions like that. It's a personal decision that you're choosing to take out in public, which means strangers will judge it, and I think it's a stupid decision. It's not the person I would want helping to mold my child.
