Professional families and nannies want to pay taxes so they have no legal worries. Audits happen!
As for the daycare vs nanny debate (I have done both teaching & nannying 20+ years), by two years most children thrive and enjoy beging with peers a few hours a day, several days a week. By three they really need social interaction with other young chidren to be able to properly socialze once they enter kindergarten. For many families it only works to have a nanny until their child heads to preschool/daycare.

You can believe what you want but regardless even if I said the city you wouldn't really know jack about it, would you, since all you know about is DC? And yes, of course I like ANYONE wish I were independently wealthy and could afford the absolute best childcare for my children, which, in our case, would be daycare. But that doesn't make me bitter or delusional about childcare - I've done my homework and the only reason we didn't pay out the nose for childcare for DS#1 is because we knew we wanted to have another soon and would have to have our own nanny anyway.

Also, let me guess, you two pps are both nannies right? I'm sure you're totally unbiased. Shouldn't you be watching those children you're so well-qualified and well-paid to take care of rather than posting on a nanny forum, anyway?

Actually, I'm from Boston but have nannied in the most expensive cities in the country, NYC and San Fran. I know daycare laws, regulations and other childcare facts because my college major was education with a focus in social policy. My life dream isn't to be a career nanny, it's a means to an end while I go to grad school for Education Administration. I'm just correcting some of your misinterpretations of what group care is and the benefits you believe it provides for children. Also, the reality of what a daycare provider really earns and the education they need are not at all what you assume. Because one director and possibly a teacher in a center holds a degree does not at all mean all of them do, especially in smaller cities. You clearly have not done your research as thoroughly as possible, I suggest actually looking up ECE requirements in your state and better yet look up information on child development. There is a reason the government regulates child:teacher ratios, and has strict safety guidelines for daycares.

Whether you prefer daycare or a nanny doesn't matter to me unless you are trying to insinuate that group care is better than individualized care. That is when I must correct you. It's like saying a nanny is better than a parent.

Oddly enough, some nannies are better than some parents. Sad, but true.

You're so full of shit PP. And by the way, nannies work many different schedules, not only 9-5 M-F. I got off work at 10 this morning, so no I'm not neglecting my job by posting here, but I would venture to guess that you are.

A bigger city than DC. And yes, day care in our area is fabulous. Small, nurturing, wonderful. The providers are college educated, trained in education - not just women who have watched children before. It's astronomically expensive though. About 2x more (or more) than having an in home nanny.

I'd like to know what city. In order to be an ECE certified teacher only takes la handful of college course and holding down a daycare job for a few months. One daycare directors are required to hold a bachelors degree. The way daycares are able to maintain their reasonable tuition with all the state required subsidies is by paying their staff very little. This is way there is revolving door of teachers in most centers. The highly qualified teachers find better paying positions, and the unqualified stay until they complete their education. While MA as a leader in education reform is changing the education requirements, those won't take full effect for the next ten years and years after for other states. No daycare program for young children will ever claim to better than individual care because everyone in education knows that individualized attention is far more important than group socialization during a child's formative years. So keep your delusions about childcare to yourself. Daycares were created to support the working class who are unable to afford nannies or have relatives to help. You seem a little bitter about your financial state since you can't seem to afford any type of childcare.

Where? I'd like to hear more about this fantasy land, where all or most daycare workers are college educated and fabulous, and where parents pay 2x what they'd pay for private in home care? Why are you being so mum about this fabulous city?
