Overreaction. You said baby goes 3 hours between feedings. By the time you got him home and fed, it was 4 hours. That's one extra hour.

They should never of offered formula without prior consent and its actually that I would be annoyed about. I'm not against formula at all but that's a mothers/fathers choice to make.
They should of contacted the mum and explained that it was 4pm and baby was showing signs of hunger but they have no milk left. and then gave options of offering formula/trying to distract til hometime/calling you in early.

He may have been offered a bottle per the day care schedule and not been hungry. Mom should give at least one extra bottle of milk for an emergency. Mom is at fault not the day care.

OP here, she's only @22 miles away from his daycare, but with traffic it's 90min.
Also, for those saying baby wasn't crying long, he was offered at bottle of formula at 4, meaning he was hungry at 4(according to his daily sheet) and he refused that bottle. So when I got there at 6, and got him home at 630, he had even crying/hungry for 2.5 hours. Absolutely inexcusable.

Many daycares absolutely call parents if a baby is crying for a long time. Expecting a daycare to call mom and tell her that they ran out of milk and the baby refused formula and asking whether anyone can bring in extra is not unreasonable at all.

They could have called the mother to let her know--and they should have done so. Mom would then have the option of asking OP to bring in more milk. Letting a baby cry for hours is not okay.

Poster from 17:28 here. As for the OP, this is not something to be mad at the daycare about. You need to let mom know that she is not supplying enough BM for the baby to get thru the day at daycare. Especially if baby is going through 4 bottles in 7 hours, sounds like he is going through a growth spurt.

Absolutely NOT true! Breastmilk is the best for baby and if moms want to breastfeed but then have to switch to formula for any reason that doesn't mean they should have given baby formula to start with!

Thought I could add some input here as I work at a daycare. In the infant room we currently have a 3 month old who is BF. Her mom drops her off around 9am, and picks her up between 4 and 5 pm.

Mom brings only enough BM for two BM bottles and then brings enough formula for 3 bottles. Baby eats 5 oz each feeding.
At our center we have to offer a bottle every 2 hrs unless we had a note from the doctor stating otherwise. I personally think that's a bit much because the 11 month old we have does not need a bottle every 2 hours!

Now I don't know if Mom is switching baby from BM to formula but I feel like she should bring enough for two more BM bottles because baby does eat at least three bottles in the time she is there. Mom says baby can go up to 3 hours between feeds.


This is just my experience with BF so far at this center. I work at another daycare as well and I haven't been in the infant room long enough to know how they handle it at that center.

All daycares are different. Personally if I put my child in daycare and he/she was BF I would make sure to have the amount of BM I thought she would drink during the day, plus a couple extra bottles worth just in case!
