We've hired our former nanny occasionally for sitting, more to keep in touch. Its a night and day difference. Kids do their homework, house is spotless, everything is done and its calm when we get home. Kids did not have as much fun and request the high school sitter. Cost $15.

A nanny is more of a substitute parent (if she's properly trained and experienced), while a sitter is more of a "big sis" type.
