OP sucks for paying nanny such a crappy wage but the nanny accepted the job offer. I hope nanny realizes that this is illegal and finds something better.

DAYCARE!

Nannies are not for low income people, we have to live off of what YOU pay us.

If you can't afford to pay a nanny a living wage, you cannot afford a nanny. Period.

NP here. I don't condone paying below minimum wage, but clearly OP can afford a nanny, because she just hired one.

No, OP can afford a daycare and this extremely (and unusual) cheap nanny. OP could POSSIBLY afford a nanny $10-12/hr which could be on the lower end of market depending on where she is. She is either really cheap and doesn't want to spend that much, OR she can't afford to spend that much and therefore really can't afford a nanny, she just got lucky this time.

I no several people who have nannies for $8-$9 dollars taking care of multiple children. Just like some parents overpay their nannies, some underpay. There is always someone out there who will accept it and that's why some parents offer it. Heck, I just read a post about a (live-in) nanny taking care of 3 troubled children for $100 dollars per week.

If you can hire a nanny for below min wage then you can afford said nanny.

OP is this you? I notice you both like to spell the word "know" as "no".

OP, this sounds unbelievable. It also sounds like you posted this to start trouble here, since you called her a cheap nanny in your thread title.

I think we have a word for that around here. Troll.

+1 that's exactly what I think every time I see one of those lowball ads. You're basically asking for the bottom of the barrel to care for your children. You might consider hiring a sitter for your sitter OP!

Hey - that's a great idea for the neurotic MB who can't trust anyone to care for her kid. A sitter for the sitter! And at OP's rates that's actually affordable!

She may not know about the fed minimum wage or may be from a state like Minnesota or Wyoming where the state minimum wage is far below the federal minimum wage. This never made sense to me as the federal would apply but I can see how this is confusing for employers in those states.

I don't agree that employers should pay as much as they can over minimum wage. Job rates are market driven and the majority of nanny jobs are just not in the $14-$20 range. This isn't a skilled profession even though it requires someone who is loving, patient, and has a good work ethic.

Maybe in other parts of the country but in the DMV that is exactly what the majority of nanny jobs pay. I made $14/hour for my first nanny job and have never made less.

Why the f*ck would a state set a minimum wage below the federal minimum wage? Just asking for trouble.

OP, I'm really not sure why you would post this. The wage your paying is below minimum wage - that is nothing to be proud of.

I have a fantastic nanny who is a tremendous find for us in every way - including financial. I think we have a phenomenal deal in her. We pay her more than double what you are paying.

I would truly be ashamed if I were paying so little for a nanny. Ashamed. And I would never admit it and I'd live in fear of losing her to someone who pays better (which is just about everyone) and/or karma smacking me w/ some sort of retribution.

So I think you should keep your mouth shut - no one is impressed by what you're paying.

There's always a bimbo out there like op who believes that any warm body that is not a corpse, is a nanny. Lol.

Just because you hire someone at a ridiculous rate doesn't mean you can afford a nanny. At that rate you have a volunteer not an employee. Also how can you feel secure in your childcare setup? All it would take is minimum wage to top your offer!! You, PP, are sick sick sick! OP can not afford a nanny. Unless her nanny has a rich spouse, her nanny is living in poverty. Again, this is a HUMAN BEING, not a car you got a good deal on, a PERSON you are asking to live on what you are paying them. If you can't afford to do better, you have no business hiring a nanny. You are not entitled to a nanny, she is entitled to a decent wage you piece of shit!
