How many people associate their use of "gyp"/"jip" with the gypsies? That never comes to mind when I use the term because it is so old at this point that I think it is used as a regular word rather than a slur. Are there even gypsies in the US??

OP you have every right to ask and they have every right to say no. If you're not happy I'd look for employment elsewhere. I no it's hard when you get attached to your charges but that's no reason to stay at a job.
