We also recently were looking for a part-time nanny and like the PP ended up using an agency. It was just too difficult to find a PT nanny on my own. We got several wonderful candidates to choose from as well. We also had to pay a placement fee but it was much less than $7k and if it doesn't work out for some reason the agency will work with us so we aren't paying the full placement fee again.

They did some of the pre-vetting and presented us with three wonderful candidates. It may be worth it for you to go the agency route, if you really aren't having any luck otherwise. Yeah, I hated writing that big placement fee check, but honestly, the nanny we found was WELL worth it. Just something worth considering, if the time draws near and you still aren't having any luck.

Just how big was that check you had to write them?

Painfully big. $7K. It was based on a percentage of her annual salary.

If she needs to leave after three months (family emergency, whatever), then what? Do you get the pleasure of forking over another $7K? Or you they give you replacement options?

Good question. Part of that money includes a guarantee to find you a new person if either I or she decide to end our contract. I think that lasts for six months. The fee also gives me access to their emergency or temporary care folks.

Our former awesome nanny is looking right now for a PT position (she is on sittercity, called to ask if I would be willing to provide her a recommendation). She is in NoVa, but does not drive. Let me know if you are interested.

PP again here -- OP, your placement fee would be smaller because it is for PT help. So don't be discouraged by that. My point is that it cuts down a lot of the vetting time and they will match you only with candidates who are looking for the hours you need.

And, the three candidates who came through our door were quality.
