It's not entitled to balk at an MB bitching about a nanny who has done everything she is responsible but then didn't take it upon herself to do more for free. A lot of MBs on this board love to compare being a nanny to their salaried jobs. Yes at your job you are expected to fill your time with whatever may need to be done, related to your job description of course, and you are paid very nicely for this expectation. A nanny is an hourly employee, whose duties are agreed upon at hiring and an hourly wage assigned based on THOSE duties, not whatever the f*ck you want during the hours she works. This nanny performed the agreed upon duties (and well, as OP stated) for the hourly rate she is being paid. If you want more, pay her more, but don't bitch because she's doing what you agreed to pay for and no more. THAT, ladies is what's entitled!

Her nanny picks up the kids and drives them to activities, cooks dinner, does dishes and other light housekeeping while assisting them with homework. She is also there to provide supervision if OP needs to meet with clients. It is a legitimate job.

Another MB here. What was the other child doing while the nanny was reading? You may want to ask the nanny to stay in the area where the kids are in case they need assistance rather than go to the den. I would not have the nanny organizing a closet or cleaning a frig during the children's homework time. If you have some filing or shredding, that would be a good task that she could do in between helping the kids. If she has finished the dinner, the dishes and laundry are done and the kids are working independently, I would let her read in the room the kids were in. This young woman sounds like someone I would want to keep to use for sitting and possible weekends away with DH in the future. Don't take her for granted.

Well OP you are an adult and being an adult comes with responsibilities. Organizing your pantry/fridge/office/whatever is one of them. If you don't like it and can afford to hire someone to do it for you, feel free. You're insulting this poor college girl by forcing her to do slave work for no extra compensation.

PP I was in my own home. Is that such a crime? I am at (successful) lawyer that works FROM HOME. I need a nanny in case the kids are home and I need to run out to meet a client or take an important phone call.


We employ a nanny and a maid. Nanny = drive to kids home from school & to/from activities, help w/ homework, cook dinner, light housekeeping

Just out of curiosity OP how did you overhear her talking to your DS. Do you have a nanny cam with speakers or were you in the house?

Some people just need a good shrink. LOL.

She's not getting paid $15 an hour to read - she's getting paid to do the work she already finished, and be, as the OP said, a highly educated homework helper. So when her responsibilities were done, and no one needed help with homework, she read. It would be so weird if she ran around the house looking to organize the OP's crap. This is not a full-time job for this girl, she's making a little money in the afternoons and evenings. It's more babysitting than nannying - they are in middle school.
