It would be difficult for lots of people even taking metro. As most of the times you have to walk to the bus stop; wait for schedule bus and then take the metro train and wait if you need to take 2 metro trains (different lines) and wait for them and then when finally you exit your destination; see if you would still a bus to take you to your work or if not; walk to your work which it would take you like 15 min or 20.
No all are so lucky living next to a metro station. I said that for my personal experience. From Arlington to DC it used to take me more than 1 1-2 hours; everyday taking metro. Never again.
