Honestly, it doesn't seem very practical nor likely to prevent infection, since your toddler is going to be in such close contact for a really extended time and not understand things like "don't grab nanny's mask and then immediately put your fist in your mouth." I know it sucks because delta is spiking, which may have changed your risk calculations versus even just a couple of weeks ago, but my personal opinion is you'd be better off trying to reduce your household's other sources of risk as well as asking your nanny what she's comfortable doing in her personal life to reduce risk. For example, no library books/visits, only outdoor activities, no playdates, playgrounds only if they're empty, masks at XYZ types of activities, or whatever else gets you to a threshold you're comfortable with and that she can live with.

We don't require our nanny to mask inside our home. They all mask when they go to the park. If your nanny is taking care of your child for 8-9 hours a day, holding him/her, feeding him/her, the virus will be transmitted, mask or no. My younger child is disabled and high risk, but I figure since he's with our nanny 45 hours a week, they'll give it to each other regardless of masks.

Are you and your children also planning to wear masks around your nanny? If not, then go kick rocks. Employers like you suck but the good thing is there are so many nanny jobs right now. I’m sure you’ll be looking for a new nanny soon.

Nanny here and I would do whatever my employers asked and really don’t mind wearing a mask. However we don’t since we’re all vaccinated and extremely careful in our private lives.

That said, my eleven-month-old charge won’t let my glasses alone and always tries to pull them off - I can’t imagine her not ripping off my mask if I wore one. Her mom can’t wear necklaces or earrings when nursing her so her mask wouldn’t last long either.

She may not mind. I mask indoors with the children, but not outdoors. Certainly encourages more time outside when possible.
