A year is short notice? This was made a Federal holiday a year ago.

The thing is, it's a nanny share, and I know the other family 1) has to work 2) has very stressful jobs and 3) just had to take a lot of time off for a family emergency. So it just feels like a huge imposition for them.
But I have guilt, especially because both families are white and the nanny is Black.

I didn’t know until I came to work and took my charge to the park where a nanny told me about it. They acted as if nothing happened and were running errands all day. I know their routine and have been with them during the whole pandemic to know when they are working and when they are clearly not. That was so selfish knowing I deserved it as an employee and as a black woman. I was really disappointed.
Would you have been willing to take it unpaid or worked a holiday later in the year that you were planning to have off? We give off a certain number of holidays and let our nanny pick from the federal holidays. We do not get most of them off or, if we take them, they count as a vacation day against our yearly limit.
Sorry for the late response. The agreement is that I take all the federal holidays they have off. There were no excuse here. They knew but just decided not to give me the day off. They just took advantage of the fact that the holiday was given at the last minute and acted as if nothing happened.

I definitely would not start looking for a new job because my employer’s could not give me the day off with less than 24 hours notice - that just seems extremely silly. There are a ton of great Juneteenth activities/ celebrations on Saturday that lots of people are going to because they do not get tomorrow off.
A nice card (you can download some neat ones from Etsy) to celebrate the day would be nice, and if you want, a gift card to a place to help me celebrate (there is a new African American owned bookstore in Downtown Silver Spring right next to ColdStone - Loyalty books, that’s really neat.
