You need to show up for work regardless.

One poster said her Mom died on a Saturday and she showed up for work the following Monday.
If she can do that then no one should be taking any time off for a silly cat.

Sounds like she wasn’t close to her mother. I personally would need several days to a week in order to recover from the loss of my mother. And even then I would still be a crying mess. People without empathy have a hard time understanding. Just bc you don’t like cats doesn’t mean someone wouldn’t be a mess at the loss of their companion. You can raise and care for a cat the way people do for their children.

Maybe if you replace “mother” with “your child” you would understand. If your child died on Saturday would you be back to work on Monday?

While it is more understandable to hear that you had to take a day off for your dog, it still is unprofessional and really immature.
No one needs a day off for grieving an animal!!

My Father passed while I was in finals in college.
While I was in shock and grief, I still studied hard to pass my exams.
Because my father wouldn’t have wanted me to throw away my education.

Grief is real, I truly acknowledge that fact.
But when grief affects your career - then that is a clear sign your priorities are whacked.

You cannot tell someone when or how to grieve, even if you don’t understand it.

Your comment about grief and career is very immature.

This made me LOL! I see nothing wrong with this- you earned it, use it how you see fit.

I hate write this but you come across as very arrogant! Most of us consider ourselves to be excellent, professional nannies and we act and are paid accordingly. Regarding the death of a pet, YOUR OPINION is that it is nothing serious enough to need a day off for. That is YOUR OPINION. I have a very old cat who has been with me through many of life’s challenges and she is not going to be around much longer. My employer has NO problem with me taking off when this inevitable death occurs. Just a day to chill with my memories and grieve. Maybe you don’t understand it. Maybe many employers would be upset. Maybe it should be talked about upfront. I just feel very fortunate to work for a compassionate family who knows I rarely take time off but this would be one time I would use my PTO without advance notice (unless I have to put my cat to sleep and know the future date). Come down off of your high horse!

Makes no difference if it’s a dog vs a cat.

You use random Pto with no notice? I’m sure your employers appreciate not being able to plan...

I'm so sorry for your loss at such an early age

I'd say you'd be asking for long term issues and career challenges down the line if you didn't take the time to grieve.

Though not enough to call into work sick just because one died.
I haven’t seen anyone but the immature OPs agree to this.

You know, sometimes people are generally struggling, mentally, physically, emotionally, and the cat or the dog is a very real pillar of support in an environment that is otherwise heartless, cruel, and unfair. When a pet dies, sure, it's about the pet, a family member; but it's also a reminder of how fragile and alone we are, how much we struggle, endlessly, generationally, just to put food on our table and a roof over our or our families' heads. When a pet dies, the entire world can seem like it's caving in. Sure, we pick ourselves up, but a day of rest may be just what stands between a hardworking person and mental breakdown. https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/a-to-z/p/pets-and-mental-health

If you don't or cannot understand this, consider yourself very lucky indeed.

I don’t even have sick leave/vacation labeled in my contract. It’s just referred to as PTO.

MB here and I should hope so! PTO is fairly earned time off!

And cats are people too. (Obviously they are not but it doesn't take a genius to understand they can be loved just the same. I'm not even a cat person.)

If your parent passes away, you rightfully deserve time off. If your cat or dog passes away, you need to grow up. Sorry, I'd lose my mind if someone was taking time off for a pet. It'd be time to find a replacement. Millennials need to learn to join the real workforce.
