That's terrible. I'm sorry you lost your job but you are probably better off without them. Best of luck in your search, you will find a new and better position.

Did you forget to lock the kid’s car seat or stroller? Big difference. The second incident I can’t actually tell what happened. You saw something in the baby’s diaper... like he ate a bead and pooped it out? (Trying to figure out the connection to kids playing downstairs and not cleaning.)

I’m sorry you were let go. You should file for unemployment and start looking for a new job. I frequently read on these boards that nannies are in high demand right now and are earning more than their usual rate. I wish you the best of luck!

One month' salary seems exorbitant and out of reach of many families.

We have a live-in nanny who is contracted for three years. The contract stipulates a 2-week bonus at the end of her term and unlimited room and board until she finds a new position. She was very happy to sign it.

Unlimited room and board with no work after the position ends, while I’m trying to find a new position? I’d sign it, even without 2 weeks of pay as a completion bonus. You do realize that live-in nannies have to be pickier, so I can take 1 week to 6 months in between positions, right?

We understand that, and we also understand that looking for work while still employed as a live-in is pretty much impossible. That's why she has ample time at the end of the position to find a new one. I don't think it's good for her to rush to find a new one so I am happy to provide a place to stay and board while she is looking for a good position. There's enough space in the house so it's not an imposition at all.

You guys are amazing!!!! I really wish more live-in contracts were worded like that!

So according to PPs, if you employ someone for 5 years at 5K a month, severance should be 25K? Hahahahaha no.

^ she’s not. The question was “what’s a typical severance amount because I realize being between jobs is rough.”

And an actual response was “my parents bought their housekeeper a condo.”

Another response was “one month's pay per year worked IS STANDARD.”

Um, no.

It seems the actual answers are (1) nothing if you give 1-2 months notice; or (2) 1-2 weeks pay if you are giving minimal notice.

Good joke. Thanks for the laugh.

No. I’m an employer. This was the woman who loved and helped raise your children! Three months severance for three dedicated years of service isn’t a laughable - it’s fair. I did it and my friends and brother did it. One month’s severance for every year of employment.

+1. My parents bought our 25 yr housekeeper a condo when she retired.

They only bought her a condo? Peasants. We bought ours a yacht, mansion, and private jet.

Stop embarrassing yourself. What her parents did was extremely generous.

I hope you understand that while very generous, this is just plainly impossible for most families.
