One month' salary seems exorbitant and out of reach of many families.
We have a live-in nanny who is contracted for three years. The contract stipulates a 2-week bonus at the end of her term and unlimited room and board until she finds a new position. She was very happy to sign it.
Unlimited room and board with no work after the position ends, while I’m trying to find a new position? I’d sign it, even without 2 weeks of pay as a completion bonus. You do realize that live-in nannies have to be pickier, so I can take 1 week to 6 months in between positions, right?
We understand that, and we also understand that looking for work while still employed as a live-in is pretty much impossible. That's why she has ample time at the end of the position to find a new one. I don't think it's good for her to rush to find a new one so I am happy to provide a place to stay and board while she is looking for a good position. There's enough space in the house so it's not an imposition at all.

Good joke. Thanks for the laugh.
No. I’m an employer. This was the woman who loved and helped raise your children! Three months severance for three dedicated years of service isn’t a laughable - it’s fair. I did it and my friends and brother did it. One month’s severance for every year of employment.
+1. My parents bought our 25 yr housekeeper a condo when she retired.
They only bought her a condo? Peasants. We bought ours a yacht, mansion, and private jet.![]()
