We matched with an au pair in Colombia in mid-February who has her visa appointment this week. When she first requested an appointment the earliest availability was August, but you can then request an "'emergency" appointment and your need for them to arrive sooner than their original appointment qualifies as an emergency. After requesting an emergency appointment they should hear about an earlier appointment within 3-4 weeks. Our au pair could have probably gotten an appointment even earlier but she mistakenly did not submit the request for an emergency appointment until a few weeks after requesting her original appointment instead of doing it right away.

Mexico is getting them. Canada doesn't need a visa. I had friends who got italy and france, both with nie though.

Mexico is still issuing J1 visas. Our aupair arrived in January, no NIE. You have to go thorugh an agency which is covered by one of the lawsuits. We host through AupairInAmerica.

Our Mexican au pair arrived in 2 weeks from her match date and on a REAL J1 visa using no NIE.

J1s are not banned in all countries, just some.

Many agencies are in the Chamber of Commerce.

I'm so confused as to how that can be true if no j1 visas can be issued???

I don't trust au pairs who are getting their visas and going around the rules. Kind of tells you how much they may or may not expect house rules.

So are these 'au pairs' people coming with tourist visas outside the official au pair program?

Agencies are not encouraging this.
