We are UMC. Our nanny has not been working since March 13. Of course we are still paying her full-time. We want her to be okay and we want her to work for us again when this is all over! We made the decision based on her safety as well as our own.

There are a lot of nannies on the market right now. The tricky thing is to figure out whether the nanny was let go because the family couldn’t afford her any more or because she wouldn’t/couldn’t quarantine safely. If she lives with a bunch of roommates or is married to a doctor or lives with a large extended family or just doesn’t believe in social distancing and is looking for ways to break the rules...

Right now, More are available. However, more families are going to be looking. The question is which side is going to tip more.

I think more families will be looking for nannies. BUT make sure they are looking for long term childcare and not just until they disinfect the daycare centers!

Starting with a newborn is a good bet.

Just how do you know that middle class famies don't hire nannies? I doubt anybody would've work for you and your snobbery very long.


Middle class families typically can’t afford a nanny.

How did the contract work? Are you paying her what she made as a teacher? Will she (and you) go back to the daycare when it reopens? Is there anything in the contract about social distancing (is that even legal? As someone noted you cannot control another person, and prior to the pandemic I would never dream of asking personal questions about what a prospective nanny does in her spare time).

We are hiring a nanny and she's starting Monday. But she's our preschool teacher that got laid off so we know her well already. We are both working and after 4 weeks of childcare juggle need a better solution. She's happy and we are happy about the arrangement. She has been self isolating except the grocery store as well.
