I almost wondered if you were someone I knew?! I have twins and live on the third floor of a condo building with no elevator! I did exactly this. Strapped each in their car seat and brought them down flight by flight. The difference here, though, is that to the extent my babies were by themselves for a few seconds, it was still within the confines of my condo building. I'm not sure how much space there is between OP's front door and the street, but I would be wary leaving a baby outside for a few seconds. It's probably hardly any different from what I did with my twin babies but just mentally, it would be harder to overcome. So I would definitely just try to put them in the stroller and go backwards if it is only three steps.
