Paying cash is fine. But you still have to pay ss and Medicare taxes and report earnings and provide tax statements. You also probably need workers insurance. It’s illegal if you skip all that. It’s not in anyone’s best interest to set up an illegal arrangement. It can really come back to bite you in the butt.

Your biggest hurdle in your plan is that you want someone to work part time and then switch to full time. You won’t find anyone decent doing that. Start them full time and up the rate with the second infant.

OP here - to be honest, I was planning on paying cash. Is there a service that people use that help you handle the taxes? Isn't paying in cash pretty common?


Only if both of you are trying to evade paying taxes. You pay by check or hire a company to pay her.

There are a bunch of companies. Homepay is used a lot, but I prefer homework solutions.

I don’t believe in paying under the table. In cash is fine as long as you are reporting it and paying proper taxes on it.

You don’t really need a service for it, google it, you can set it up yourself.

It is illegal and there can be serious legal ramifications if you hire someone and pay them illegally. Most people don’t get caught, but do you want to live with that possibility?

It’s pretty common with illegal immigrants, which makes what you are doing a form of taking advantage of them and wrong. An educated, legal and professional nanny isn’t getting paid under the table. Are you getting paid under the table at your job? Do you consider yourself to be a professional and educated person who pays taxes in order to help society?

There are plenty of payroll services to pay your many legally. Go to google and type in payroll services.

I have had my own nanny and a share very recently. This is totally reasonable and you will get good candidates. Even better if you are willing to pay cash (which we were not, and I don't recommend it, but throwing it out there).

Not everyone can get the most expensive nanny and that's OK. People are having babies every day. It's a huge market. segmentation is normal.

Also, some nannies like shares. It's tough when they are babies but if it's a longer term arrangement or the kids are older, they entertain each other in a way that kids from one family with say, a two-year age gap, would not.
