The agencies cannot place an au pair farther than one hour's drive from a counselor. This rule is in everyone's best interests.

If the agencies won’t place an AP, contact a national nanny placement agency. I’d suggest looking for someone from the Maine/Vermont/New Hampshire area, northern Minnesota/Wisconsin, anywhere other than city in North Dakota, or in the Rockies. You want someone familiar with depths of 1 foot or more of snow on a regular basis, and that life doesn’t stop when snow flies. Personally, I hate the cold, but I have looked at a few positions in Alaska, just because I know how to handle the weather and when to call it quits.

You could also advertise for a nanny in Anchorage to relocate. I’m in Juneau, and every time I’m in Anchorage I meet a ton of people wanting to move to SE AK.

If you’re looking at APs, be open to starting nannies. If they don’t have any references, they’ll be more likely to fit your budget and do what you want without preconceived ideas about what works. On the other hand, you could pay more and not have to do more than lay out the main guidelines and let her run with it.

Oh yeah, better call your senator, ha! Tell them to get a Home Depot in there too! Maybe Dean and Deluca.... be right, I’m writing my senator for a dean and deluca too! If that doesn’t work, for some reason, then maybe look into alternate forms of child care. Turns out that you aren’t owed an AP, weird, I know.
