She has bills to pay so you pay her every day and every week. You cannot make her make up the hours that’s called banking hours and is illegal. You can ask her to do a little work while you are gone during her normal hours though

Now we are in a jam as she wants to take 4 weeks off (two unpaid) within the next month, none of which overlaps with our vacation. How are we supposed to be without a nanny for a month? She says she will help us find someone, but I don't want "someone." We love her, but I just don't know how we can make this work and I feel it sets a bad precedent. There is a reason she has two weeks vacation in her contract.

Since it is unpaid, I would call a nanny temp agency and have someone fill in. everyone should have backup care.

I guess it depends on how much you love her, her reason for the 4 weeks off, versus your options for coverage (assumes you both are working). Maybe you have a foreign born nanny who is going back home for a month? If so, this will probably happen every few years. If you don't have that much annual vacation time, it's going to be a pain. I'd probably use these home visits to replace her with a new nanny. I don't buy the refrain from the nannies who claim they are such a lifeline for their charges but then are quick to say "of course, you must have back-up care." It's one thing if back-up care is a mom, dad, or grandma but quite another thing if you are supposed to expose your little ones to a stranger so nanny can go back to South America for a month. No way my husband or I could take vacation for more than 2 weeks in a row without jeopardizing our jobs.

We travel a fair amount and will be going away for a full week with the baby mid-February. Do we pay for all the days we are gone without asking her to make up part of the hours elsewhere? Perhaps that's not appropriate? Do her two weeks paid vacation happen anytime PLUS she gets paid for all the time we are gone? I assume this is the case but just want to make sure.

For more context, it's one pretty easy 4 month old baby who naps a lot at an hourly salary of $22 with lots of opportunity for overtime.

We pay for 52 weeks a year, a guaranteed minimum of 40hrs a week, we also offer 3 weeks PTO (of her choice, includes sick days) and all federal holidays paid at 8hrs. Anything that I choose to take off outside of her requested PTO is paid by me. I'm not the federal government here-shutting down at will and not paying people!

All nanny employers should have backup caregivers. This is in events like this and if you need a date night but your nanny is unavailable and or you don’t want to always have to ask her when she’s with your child 5 days a week. Find a temp for a month and suck it up if you want this nanny to care for your child the other 10 months out the year.

Let her know that you want consistent care. If she doesn’t want to provide that, you can find someone to overlap starting a week or two before she wants to travel, she can go, but she’ll need to find a new family for when she gets back because you will retain the new nanny.

Our nanny gets two weeks of vacation a year. They pick one, we pick one (but we try to pick one that they want). If we travel aside from that, we pay anyway.
