Most hourly employees are paid by payroll. Only cash workers are usually paid the same week.

I’m a nanny, and I prefer payroll. I’ve been paid weekly, biweekly and monthly. In all cases, you get paid one statement later, and your last payroll deposit is one statement period after work is discontinued.

We use a payroll service and I get paid in real time.

Which payroll service? I think most nannies and employers would prefer to switch, so please name it

DP- My MB uses SurePayroll and I’m paid on Friday for the week worked. Zero problems.

SurePayroll doesn't offer real-time payment. They do have same-day direct deposit (which comes at a cost, and which most payroll services offer for a fee), but you still have to enter the hours in the morning for payment that afternoon.

So while it's great that your employers is paying you on Friday for the week that just ended, they are most likely running payroll several days earlier and assuming you will work as planned that week. For those who have to fill out a timesheet at the end of the work week to determine the amount of the check, this isn't an option.

Exactly. The only way this works is if the employee is salary and not penalized for taking time off/paid overtime for extra hours OR if a nanny has guaranteed pay, no extra overtime and no unexpected (and not covered) time off.

You need a nanny with more education who can manage her finances better. We have never had a nanny who could not handle waiting two weeks for their first paycheck to be direct-deposited.

My boss pays me one week in advance because that's what I've always requested.

You make the decision about what to do in this circumstance but it's a terrible feeling to be expecting and relying on a paycheck, just to find out it isn't coming. I've been in this situation before and they didn't pay me for more than 100 hours before I got a check. I was young and uncomfortable saying anything and I wound up sobbing on the train on the way to work one day before it was finally straightened out. I was using quarters, then dimes, then nickels to pay for my subway rides to work.

This is exactly why we no longer use these payroll companies.

How are they paid on Friday for work they just did that day?

You shouldn't shout your stupidity. If an emoyee is on vacation or sick they still get paid.

?? Of course employees who are on vacation or sick get paid--but they still get paid the following week, not the same day, with the vast majority of payroll systems. I don't know of any payroll systems with same-day turn around for checks.

There is a way to set these payroll services up so that the employee receives a check sooner. I would do that.

That is pretty unusual--most hourly employees submit timesheets that need to be reviewed and submitted to the payroll company. The earliest I've ever been paid for hourly work is the Wednesday folling a Friday submission, and usually it's the Friday (or sometimes even the second Friday!) following.

Agreed that if this was made clear to the nanny, it's on her. If it wasn't, then that's more problematic.

I have a question OP.

Did you let the Nanny know ahead of time that a.)Her next payment would be via direct deposit & that you wouldn’t be writing a check out to her and b.)That she would not be receiving any form of payment for the first payroll week?

If you made both things clear, yet she is still upset then that is on her.
However if you never told her a + b, then she would have every right to be angry.

I would not be a happy camper if my pay was delayed a week & I wasn’t informed about it at least a week ahead of time.

Nannies, like many blue-collar employees tend to live paycheck ->> paycheck.
One skipped week of pay w/out any forewarning can mean no milk in the refrigerator or no $$ to pay an already past due bill.
