I usually put in some specific requirements or preferences (like - must have experience working w/ ages x-y, must be comfortable with a dog in the home, etc...) and then say that I will respond to anyone who takes the time to specifically address the questions and characteristics I list in the posting.
And I do respond to anyone who bothers to read sufficiently and take the time to make it clear that they read and are responding directly to what I'm looking for.
It's tremendously helpful. It also frees me from the guilt of not being able to answer every applicant. If I get clearly rote/generic responses I just delete them.
It can still be a slog but it does significantly cut down the time involved, and it's a very useful culling tool.
