OP here. She sees a psychiatrist occasionally (her parents told me). And her parents have told me that they know how difficult she can be. I really don't feel comfortable asking more probing questions about possible medication or therapies nor do I know if she is or as have been on medication.

I just hate it when she is like this. So rude and mean.

Its not rude and mean. Its called mental health illness. She can't help it ... just like a diabetic can't help feeling dizzy if their blood sugar is off. Its not anything personal against you. So probably best not to judge her but just be there for her kids when she is in these phases.

Her MB has no right to be rude, sullen, and mean to OP and OP doesn't owe her anything but to take care of her charges. Just because you are the employer doesn't give you the right to abuse your employees.

Being understanding while someone figures out dosages or deals with PPD is one thing. Allowing someone to be verbally abusive, with or without children present, is beyond being understanding.

It doesn't matter whether she is bipolar, PMS, or just a general bitch, you should not have to be subjected to such behavior. No job is perfect but a pleasant atmosphere is a must. If I were you, I would be looking for a new position because this situation will keep you walking on eggs with her forever.

I once worked for an alcoholic who had these mood tantrums and it was pure Hell. Good luck.

I had a MB like this, but she’s go from being friendly, affectionate and calling me “family” to micromanaging, nitpicking evening I do, adding asinine chores (like cleaning baseboards...no) and at times even being verbally and once physically abusive.

I was very young when I worked for her so ignorant of how I needed to be treated. I think she had bookplate depression and wasn’t medicated because she was very “god will fix it all”. I’m empathetic to mental health issues, but that doesnt mean I am to be mistreated.

Have you tried talking to her about how you feel when she treats you like this?

People on here are suggesting that it is mental illness due to the fact that there seems to be a common pattern here.

This pattern makes it highly likely that this IS a mental issue vs. an eating disorder or insomnia.

For all we know she could have occasionally gone to a shrink for eating disorders or insomnia. She might be mentally ill, of course, but she could just as easily be moody and takes her bad mood out on everyone especially her employees.

Sorry OP for your situation (+ some of the rude responses on here.)

It sounds to me like your MB suffers from bipolar disease or clinical depression.
But that is just my opinion.

And if she IS seeing a psychiatrist, then it is highly likely that she is taking medication for her issues.

Sure, she may need to switch up her meds or whatever.
But as a Nanny unfortunately, that is not your domain.
I would just assume this is just how things will be & you have two options available: ->

• I know you truly love your charge.
However if her parent is treating you like this and you choose to remain in this position, keep in mind that it likely will get progressively worse w/time.
Can you continue in a job where dealing w/her off + on moods are worth caring for your charge?

• You can issue them your walking papers as soon as you find a brand-new family to work for.
Ask your old boss if it would be possible to still see your charge every now & then.
Maybe you could be a back-up and/or date night sitter for them.
