Thank you. May e the title was indeed incorrect. Like I said I’m new to this, never had the need to look for care before. A student sounds like a great option because of the flexibility. I’ll look into student boards . Thanks.

I'm the person who said this could work if you were just looking for occasional backup care and, since you are, it absolutely can. People on this forum are bristling because they're nannies; your title was "live in nanny," but you're not looking for a nanny. What you're looking for is a student. Best case scenario, a grad student, since they'll have less fixed class hours/more availability and will likely have grown out of the campus scene.

A college student who gets to save on rent in exchange for a few nights a month sounds like it could be reasonable. Yes there is some inconvenience to giving up occasional nights out, but it might be well worth the trade off of not having to work 20 hours a week at a retail job to make rent. You could also have an arrangement where if she has some plans that are important, she tells you X days in advance and then it’s on you to get a backup caretaker, which might only need to be a couple of hours until your regular person comes home for the evening.

I get it won’t work for everyone but you only need to find ONE person for the job. And you’ll probably get / want to look for someone who is a bit of a homebody as opposed to a partier for a good match. Why not post on some sites / local university job boards and see what you get?

If she wants quality care she needs to guarantee hours. End of story. Her proposed arrangement has no appeal at all.

Come to think of it, it might be a good fit for a single mom with 2-3 kids, if OP has room and provides board for all of them. If she can nanny or babysit for other kids, it could work.

the thing is that you can't just expect someone to live in your house and take care of your kid at your whim. say you find a student and they have plans to go to a concert on a friday night, then on monday morning you learn you'll need to travel that weekend. if you aren't paying them to be available, they're going to tell you no.
i know this is harsh, but this job doesn't sound like a good fit for a single parent, unless you can find family to stay with you or something. no one would be willing to keep any and all time, including overnights, open without a good salary-unless their only other option would be being homeless/living in their car. i can't see that being a person you would want taking care of your child, but that's up to you.

To and from school is not an issue. My daughter walks to the bus stop which is in the same community. It’s just the overnights that I’m concerned with.

The problem is that she also needs someone who can get her child to and from school, and be there if it's a snow day, child gets sick, etc..
