Subject: Is $10.50 enough?
I'm also in the western suburbs.
$10.50 is too low. $12 is the minimum that a legal nanny should make. That's even low- more of a babysitter rate.
Most of my friends pay $18, but they've had their nannies a long time and have multiple kids.
$11 is min wage for downtown Chicago only, not suburbs. Suburbs are maybe $5 less than Chicago.
The economy has picked up and nannies are making more than 3 years ago.
I think you need to go to your family and tell them nanny wages have increased and a fair rate would be $12 or $13/hour and you need a raise. But if you do this, you have to be prepared to look for another job, because they may fire you.

Thanks to all of you for jumping to my rescue. Unfortunately the minimum wage in Illinois is $8.25/hr. I don’t know how anyone is meant to live on that, especially after taxes, but there you go.
I am currently nannying for one child, and he’s going to be 4 in April ?
With him in school, I work about 35-36 hours a week. Also, no, I unfortunately do not receive any of those benefits (sick time, pro, insurance, holiday pay). None of that =\
I may have solved my problem though. What I did was mention that I was getting an evening and weekend job, and the mother right away jumped in and said they’ve been meaning to giveback me a raise, and since they’ve both just started new positions, it should happen soon.
