or one of those illegal foreign nannies who will ask for weeks and weeks off to go back to their home country at the last minute.

Illegal nannies would not be able to return, so why bother asking to take weeks and weeks off. "Last minute"? You mean, without notice? Maybe ICE got them.
PPs, I think you 2 know each other.

I'd ignore her complaining about personal stuff, and give her a talk about showing up on time.

Your nanny doesn't care about you. She feels like she can get other job if she wants to. Foreign nannies are mostly great as nannies and will do a lot of things to appreciate the job. But if your son I'd being fine then I think is fine. You can't compare your job and a nanny job. Nannies takes care of human beings who needs lots of love, protection and dicipline.

Neither question matters. Employees are expected to be on time regardless of experience or hourly wage.

Poorly compensated employees are more likely to perform poorly, especially when her work isn't considered important.

No they aren't. Grown ups accept a position knowing the salary and show up on time. Childish to think otherwise. I am a nanny, btw.

Op didn't hire a grown up. That would cost more.
