I am charging $50/hr, but I live in LA and it's 3 kids. If you don't want to pay that rate then don't go out.

MB here. I'd have zero problems with this. I'm an RN. I get paid double for the big holidays and I'd have no problems with DS' Nanny doing the same. It's smart of her!!

No way should you have apologized or been upset. The appropriate response to your coworker would have been, "Yup, good sitters can charge a lot on NYE." Then it is totally up to them as to whether they want to pay it or not or find someone else (who may be less expensive).

There is rarely agreement on DCUM, OP. You have no business being upset and nothing to apologize for. I would be fine if I recommended our nanny and her rate was $100 an hour. Who am I to have feelings about it one way or the other.

We only booked a babysitter one New Year's Eve because we "HAD" to go to this particular party and it was adult only. It was extremely hard finding a reputable well recommended nanny/sitter for that night. Finally one of our friend's recommendations agreed to sit that night. It cost us $45 an hour. But all my friends had told me it would be a lot more expensive in NYE. So there you go. It seems common practice. We felt very comfortable with her and she was wonderful with the kids.

MB here. I generally agree w/ the responses here - you are not responsible for what your nanny charges or what anyone else may or may not agree to.

If people don't use her, or don't use her more than once, she can figure out why for herself (or ask them) - it's still not your responsibility. You provided the referral and that's all that was needed.

Going forward you're free to word your referral along the lines of "I'm happy to recommend her - she's fantastic, but be forewarned that she isn't cheap."

If her normal rate is 2.5x less than $50 you are paying her $20 an hour OP?

No wonder she has to charge $50 an hour and is always eager to babysit. She’s being underpaid.

NYE, Valentine's Day are prime times and only an idiot would think rates weren't doubled. In any case, it is none if your business, so butt out!
