While I fully concur that a Nanny is not responsible for the actual hands-on care for your dog,
It is her responsibility to make sure the dog doesn’t run away.

My NF has an indoor cat.
While I am not responsible for caring for it, I am very careful whenever the front door is open to make sure she doesn’t try to run out.

It is just common sense in my opinion.

I agree but common sense is not very common here.

I too wonder how the dog got out? Is is possible one of the kids let the dog out? Or was a gate left open that nanny didn't know about.

Do believe this is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Op I think you need to give more detail.

How was the dog let out/allowed to go missing?

Did the nanny even notice?

If it was a safety issue (ie front door left wide open for hours, than yes livid is the right word). Than that's cause for concern and discussion, if it was a oh hell last I saw the dog was when he was begging for vrealfast, all well he sleeps all day he will turn up.

Perhaps it's your dog that needs to be trained?

Nanny here.

I care for an infant and poorly behaved dog.

I was told I'm responsible for the infant. The dog is poorly trained and generally a nuisance. He barks constantly and gets in the infants face. When I walk him he pulls at the leash or gets aggressive towards other dogs/people.

I once opened the front door to get a package and the dog darted out without warning. The infant was inside and thankfully the mailman caught the dog and I was able to bring him inside.

If he had run into the road and gotten hit I wouldn't FEEL awhile but my primary responsibility is for the infant. I will never compromise his safety for the dogs. I've worked with numerous pets and never have I had such a poorly behaved dog.

I really resent this animal and often he makes my job more difficult (barks nonstop when the babies sleeping). He is unpredictable.

I'm not sure how your dog behaves, but often it's not easy to care for children and an untrained pet.

Is it in your Nannies contract to be responsible for the dog? Does her pay reflect that responsibility? Most dog sitter charge $10-14 an hour in this area. If she is responsible fled the dog, do you pay her as a dog sitter as well as a nanny?

If not, let it go. Find a dog sitter.

I'm by no means an animal hater. I have 3 pets, and love them dearly but they are well behaved.

If your dog is difficult, take that into account.

It's not that hard to not let a dog out..

Our nanny is asked to make sure the dog does not leave when people go in or out, and to keep the water bowl filled (we fill it before we leave for work), especially on hot days. That is not too much to ask.

I feel terrible for your kids. Imagine growing up with a mom who loves a dog more than her own children.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. To be clear, it’s not her job to do anything at all pertaining to the dog. She doesn’t let him out or walk him. He generally sleeps on the couch and doesn’t bother her or anyone else.

I highly doubt this. Who lets the dog out to use the bathroom then?

Either way, your husband being livid is over the top. It's a dog and it was found. End of story.

How did the dog get out? Did the nanny leave the door or gate open?

Btw "livid" is way over the top, OP. The dog is fine. Tell you husband to put on his big girl panties and calm down.

We have cleaners over once a week and they have never let the dog out, despite the fact that I’m sure she would love to escape from their vacuums. It is common sense not to let a dog out.

Nannies care for children, not pets.

OP, how did the dog get out?

Honestly, if the dog is not the nanny's responsibility, I can't see why you think she should notice that he was gone.
