OP again. We're not in the DC-MD-VA area where rates are higher. We are in the suburbs of a major city and pay $20/hour while the going rate around here is $15/hour starting, but for someone who is probably an immigrant (yet native English speaker) and maybe no college. I know a few people who started their nannies at $20/hour and they are college-educated, U.S. born nannies. We are not being cheap here.

There are many great nannies who speak English but you moms choose the cheaper nannies who speak limited English. Boo hoo

You should be able to find an AMERICAN former preschool teacher of $27 an hour. You are doing something wrong, PP.

I am not OP, but I pay 27 per hour in Fairfax and just cannot find a good nanny with a handle on English. Our current nanny spoke well enough to get by the interview and is incredibly nice, but it's a real problem that we don't know how to fix (and we'll feel bad letting her go, because she is, after all, nice).
