Maybe it happened a little differently, and unintentionally? Something like:
DS "I like to eat chicken! Do any people eat cats or dogs?"
Nanny "Sometimes in China they use dog meat for special dishes" (true)
DS "Weird, what does the food look like?"
Nanny (pulls out phone) "Whoops!"
It just seems that saying this to a child is so bizarre that it seems unlikely it went down exactly as DS/you interpreted without having any other red flags for a year and a half.

I don't get the outrage over this. People have all kinds of pets- rabbits, ducks, pigs, even chicken. These are all snimals just like Fido which people in different cultures around the world eat. And he is 6 yo not a toddler and can understand an explanation.

I would educate your nanny and possibly fire her if her ridiculous opinions continue.

Why? Chinese do eat dogs.
Certainly not appropriate for the nanny to tell the child without clearing with the parents. Also a 6 year old! There truth and age appropriate truth.
