Yup, and we tell her not to but she says giving gifts is how she expresses love. What can you do but say thank you?

We do 2 weeks.
We love her and would be unable to do our jobs effectively without her, so I want her to know we want her to stay!
(She is our 3rd nanny in 3 years. One moved away after 6 months for a man. She was good. One lasted the 4 week probation period as she was terrible. Our wonderful nanny has been with us 2.5 years. Nannies aren't all a wonderful fit for your family).

Last year we gave her close to a week's salary and she went to buy us very expensive gifts that were equal to what we gave her. DH and I were very insulted. She did the same thing for our birthdays and our wedding anniversary so since then, I treat her here and there (instead of getting her something for her birthday) cos I don't want her to feel as if she needs to reciprocate

How odd. Our nanny spends a few hundred on gifts for the kids and us but, thankfully, she keeps the rest.

+1

+2. Treat your employees as you want to be treated.

I have never received 2 weeks salary from my employer. That's insane.

I give $500.

So my last three employers were insane? Wow, what are the odds?!

PS the poster said "as you want to be treated" not "as you have been treated".

Is a $100 cash gift reasonable plus a small tangible gift?

I am a nanny and last year I started with a newborn on December 6th and was given a $100 Amazon gift certificate on Dec 25th. I was truly blown away by their generosity as I expected nothing. They have proven over this last year to be an amazingly wonderful couple. I think your gift is perfect.

Considering the short time with her, yes, it's fine. But let her know how much you appreciate her dedication, and it'll be much more next time.
