Not OP but I would guess she may have an extra car key, but feels it is important to have a spare for when it is needed - such as now.

Your nanny shops and fills your gas tank? I'm jealous.
Bring the extra grapes to work, reinforce the point about gas (or just fill it yourself) and forgive her for the $300. I would designate a place for the key and any other valuables the kids can't reach so there is no ambiguity about who lost the key for next time.
If she is good with the kids, etc. then don't let a car key spoil a good thing.

Pay for the key and then get Tile. It's been a lifesaver for us with lost keys and stuff.

Do you really think a nanny who isn't deserving of a holiday bonus (whatever that means for your family) is worth keeping employed? A nanny should be reducing your stress, not adding. I am far more frugal with my employers money than I am my own. I know they buy foods on the cheap and even though my values are to buy pastured eggs for myself, I happily buy the cheaper ones for my employers and make zero mentions of what I buy or why.
I am cautious with their things. I would not have been able to just walk out without making serious attempts to find the key. But I could only stay and look for so long and may have to leave right away if I had plans that evening. I do not think the nanny should be under any obligation to pay for any portion of the replacement key, that is a risk of being an employer. If she is not bringing value to your family, replace her, but don't punish her in hopes of that changing the dynamic in a positive way.

Don't need to. Have a FT one that is willing to help out with errands. The idea that gassing the car that is provided for Nanny's use isn't nanny's job is really confounding.
