Depends on the culture.
Many don't intend to pay you back. They don't think long term. Same culture as those countries that hit and run car accidents are common.

I felt bad for my monthly cleaner of TWO YEARS who asked me to borrow $400 because he had to pay his painting crew and he was short. I knew he had a side biz of painting homes and I gave it to him when he suddenly showed up at my door. I made him sign a statement saying it was a loan. Little did I know he would stop showing up thereafter and take the attitude of why can't you let go of $400, I'll pay you when I can, you never gave me holiday bonuses. He could have just showed up 4 times to repay the loan instead of disappearing. The irony is that I was about to recommend him to my husband's coworker who needed weekly cleaning for a huge house.

This is a strange thread, a former babysitter asking for money, OP asking if this happens to others and a post from someone offering nanny spy service.

Wondering if people had too much kool aide over the weekend.

Of course people will have someone asking for money. I wonder about common sense from someone wondering if a former babysitter asking for money and then if it is normal, sure for people looking to scam. Really a nanny looking to spy on other nannies for a fee, not enough work on your side of the fense.

Yep DCUM is the drama place, and yes a bit entertaining at times

Yes, our nanny has asked us for loans several times. However, she had been our nanny for more than a year when that started, we only did it on a very limited basis, and in hindsight I wouldn't do it again.

The dynamics of the request you received aren't particularly different than anyone you barely know asking for money. Having been a babysitter for you for a brief period doesn't change that.

It's a bad idea, you shouldn't expect to get the money back, and you already know that right? So there you go...

What a strange question. Lots of people are asked for money all the time. Without a name or something, how would anyone know if they've been approached by this woman?

Or are you actually thinking she might take serial babysitting jobs, quit them, and then months later go back to the families to ask for money? All the while applying for jobs using those families as references?

This is kind of a crazy thing to think someone else might be able to tell you if this specific woman is a scam artist. Since you are clearly considering loaning her the money, I would say that she knows an easy mark when she sees one, whether or not she has intentions of repaying.

If you're really worried about the scam part, but not the money, ask her to tell you what it's for an you'll pay it directly.

I posted this message. I am not naïve, ignorant, troll....and so on (what is the need to get so rude-its a forum to help each other out). I understand that there is zero probability of getting this money back so we would consider it as charity. She was crying on the phone so we felt bad and thought maybe this could be a life-altering thing for her. However, we would not like to be taken for a ride by a scam artist as we hardly know her and yes she ditched us because I assumed she wanted more hours than we could give. So I just wanted to see if someone else experienced this unusual occurrence in the DMV area and because someone called me to ask for a reference for her.

Since my ex-MB and husband is not a USA citizen - and still need to complete her study they had no choice but to stop chasing the money.
What is them not being a US citizen got to do with anything? They should take her to court for their money.

So watch out. Some nanny is very bad and know how to manipulate naïve parents.



They should take her to court to get their money back. You dont have to be a US citizen to do that. Assuming they didnt mistreat the nanny why do they care of the other party calls the Police? The Police wont do much anyway, its all civil.
