It's 36 hours per week. This woman is offering $5.55/hour. It IS bad. The fact that people like you diniss this shit is why it is allowed to happen.

I agree.

As long as people are willing to work for $5/Hr., then people will continue paying such ridiculous wages.

I work as a live in for $500 a week flat, 52 weeks a year. My kids are school aged, so most of the time I'm only working 15hrs a week, I take on various jobs during the day, including dog walking and some babysitting of young kids, I also do light housekeeping for the family (I do all of the laundry and grocery shopping, walk the dog once a day, and do an overnight once a month). Snow days, teacher work days and SOME summer weeks are longer hours, up to 45, but even in summer the kids are often signed up for half day camps. I do not vacation with my family, but they take approx. 4 weeks off a year and I try to time my vacations with theirs.

On the weeks I'm at 15hrs, my pay is $33/hr and the weeks I'm at 45, it comes to $10/hr. I love my arrangement!

As a Mom now I want someone who likes children and enjoys being around them and has basic common sense. I don't need someone with a degree to make cookies and go to the playground with my 3yo.

As a young Nanny in my 20's the job posted here would have been ideal for me, 3 long days are ok and I have the 2 other days to work for someone else if I want to. $200 a week to do what I like with and have no bills aside from my phone would have been ok.

For a first or second position, less then 2 years of experience working with children, fine. Third position or later and/or more than 2 years of experience? NO WAY! Sorry, but I live-in exclusively. That's a horrible rate!

I guess she could raise it to $10.00 and hour and the nanny could get an apartment in the slums of DC and hope to not get stabbed for $1000 a month. Then need a car or metro to get to work and have to leave an hour earlier and get home an hour later with traffic. Clever.

You're being obtuse. The ad was for silver spring. $10/hour is not market for even the most basic of nannies. $10/hour would be an appropriate live in rate depending on the job requirements. For live out she'd need to pay more like $15/hour, nanny could find a 2 bedroom apartment and a roommate, paying $600-700/month for her portion AND not have to live with her boss and have someone telling her how to live her life.
