Her car was giving her a lot of trouble and we were concerned for her safety. We ended up buying her a new car at one od those once a year blowouts. It's a subcompact Japanese car but it's been trouble-free. She's still with us and it's been 6 years since we bought her the car. Sometimes digging deep is the right thing to do for a special person.

You sound like the most awesome employers ever!!
In certain areas where public transportation isn't feasible, such as CA, just having a reliable vehicle to get around in takes a huge amount of anxiety off ones shoulders. Because it has a domino effect.
• You need a working car to get to work.
• If you don't have a vehicle, then unfortunately you cannot get to work & will most likely lose your job immediately.
• If you lose your job, you lose the opportunity to generate a living for you + your family.
Then what is next....??
Since you have been 100% loyal and affordable to your nanny family OP, they could either have just outright gifted you the car or at the very least let you pay it off in installments.
They sound like selfish and cheap employers to me.
I mean look at all you do for them! The least they can do for you is help you out when you need a "hand-up" vs. a "hand-out."
